40 by 40

Today is my 39th birthday, which means I'm entering into my 40th year of life. I had a bit of time yesterday while waiting on our clothes at the laundromat. I decided to make a list of things I'd like to accomplish before I turn 40.

I may not accomplish all of these things, but, as Robert Browning wrote,

...a man’s reach should exceed his grasp,
Or what’s a heaven for?

So without further ado, here are 40 things I hope to accomplish this year:


  1. carry my own mug instead of using disposable ones
  2. take shorter showers
  3. go meatless on Mondays (#meatlessmondays)
  4. pick up 5 pieces of trash per day
  5. upcycle 3 pieces of furniture

Physical Health

  1. cut out soft drinks completely
  2. drink 8 glasses of water a day
  3. do a Tough Mudder
  4. exercise 3 times a week
  5. maximum of 1 sugarless coffee a day


  1. memorize 1 book of the Bible
  2. forty day fast
  3. mentor and be mentored
  4. read 8 classics of the Christian faith
  5. read 8 theological books that challenge my views


  1. Solo Piano, Volume 2

  3. worship album with Marty Mikles
  4. family album
  5. musical with Joe Caddy


  1. visit a mosque
  2. visit a synagogue
  3. visit a cathedral
  4. visit a prison
  5. visit a nursing home
  6. visit the Statue of Liberty


  1. meet everyone on my street
  2. have a monthly "families night" with friends
  3. join or start a regular prayer/worship meeting
  4. try three local restaurants
  5. invite a neighbor over for a meal
  6. participate in City Serve


  1. visit 3 NYC museums
  2. monthly Daddy day each with my kiddos
  3. plan at least one road trip
  4. learn Spanish
  5. sponsor a child


  1. re-visit the camp we first met and fell in love
  2. celebrate our 15th wedding anniversary
  3. surprise
